Join us on Wednesday, March 1 at 6 pm at the Gunnison Library or virtually for a foreign policy discussion about Global Famine.
Fears of global food shortages have followed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which has disrupted grain shipments from the major grain producer. But what about countries and regions that were suffering before this impending shortage? How is famine defined, and how is it different from simple food shortages? What if any remedies are there? Event Details
Join us at the Gunnison Library on Thursday, March 2 at 6 pm for a presentation by Luke Danielson, President and Co-Founder of Sustainable Development Strategies Group, a nonprofit research institute focused on mineral resources and their role in society.
About the presentation:
Luke will discuss how the “Green Minerals Boom” will impact our communities and indigenous rights.
The transition to renewable energy and the fight against climate change are a critical challenge of our time in history. According to the International Institute for Sustainable Development, at least 23 key minerals will be critical to the development and deployment of solar panels, wind turbines, electric vehicles and energy storage technologies. Many of these minerals are projected to surge in demand in the coming decades.
There is no way to access these materials without significant impacts on our communities, and on the environment. The environmental impacts of processing rare earth elements are quite significant. There is no place exempt from this search for minerals. There are a number of potential deposits near Gunnison, some of which may well be developed in coming years to meet the coming demand.
Some of the most significant impacts of this minerals boom will fall on indigenous peoples, both in the U.S. and in other parts of the world.
Indigenous Peoples often lack formal recognition of their rights to lands, territories and natural resources, are often last to receive public investments in basic services and infrastructure, and face multiple barriers to participating fully in the formal economy, enjoying access to justice, or participating in political processes and decision making.
Indigenous Peoples own, occupy, or use a quarter of the world’s surface area. But they safeguard 80 percent of the world’s remaining biodiversity.
It is important that this “green mining boom” take place in a framework that protects and respects indigenous rights. Justice requires this. So does avoiding delay in accessing needed minerals
You can read more about Luke here: https://www.sdsg.org/our-people
This event is free and open to all.

Join us on Wednesday, March 8 at 6 pm at the Gunnison Library or virtually for a foreign policy discussion about Iran at the Crossroads.
By the fall of 2022, Iran was in a state of turmoil due to widespread protests against government-enforced wearing of the hijab, a failing economy, an ineffective new president, and the looming succession of the country’s leader, Ayatollah Khamenei. Abroad, renewal of the Iran nuclear deal seemed doubtful and tensions remain high between Iran, Israel, and Arab states. Many Iranians have lost hope of a better future, and the country seems at a crossroads. How should the United States deal with it? (by Lawrence Potter. Full article PDF here)

Event Details
Join us on Wednesday, March 8 at 6 pm at the Gunnison Library for a conversation about grief and resilience with local author, Marv Weidner. Marv recently released “When the Rocks Sing: A Story of Love, Loss, & Learning to Love Again.” Marv will be joined by local grief counselors Carol GoldfainDavis, his co-author, and Laura Scales, as well as by Julie Reid the Director of Living Journeys.
About the book:
When the Rocks Sing is unique among books about grief. It places the voice of a man who lost his beloved wife to cancer side by side with the perspective of the grief counselor who walked the road of rebuilding and resiliency with him. After his loss, Marv learned that grief is an organic, unstructured experience. There is no schedule or correct timeframe for grief. The emotions we have while grieving, and when we experience them, are as individualized as the people experiencing them. Everyone’s grief is unique to them, and any expectation to the contrary is counterproductive to the grieving process and counterintuitive to anyone who has lost a loved one. Much of this book is about how Marv Weidner found the resilience and sense of purpose to begin living his life again. If you’ve lived through that kind of loss, you will likely see and hear echoes of your own experience–your own grief. This book addresses a variety of topics that may speak to your experience or your desire for healing and moving forward. Those topics include harnessing resiliency, facing grief head on, embracing loss as an integral part of life, staying present in the midst of trauma, de-stressing in healthy ways, reaffirming or discovering a new sense of purpose, and much more. When we embrace the impermanence of life, we can experience the joy of living every day and can more naturally live with a sense of gratitude. This is powerful at any time but especially so when we are faced with a health crisis or a loss. When the Rocks Sing will be the perfect companion on your journey.
This event is free and open to all.

Join us on Wednesday, March 15 at 6 pm at the Gunnison Library or virtually for a foreign policy discussion about Climate Migration.
As climate change accelerates and drought and rising sea levels become more common, millions of people in affected regions must uproot themselves and seek safety elsewhere. Who are these affected individuals, and how might the United States aid them, and be affected by the migration? (by Karen Jacobsen. Full article PDF here)

Event Details
Qigong is offered at the Gunnison Library every Third Thursday of the month. See a description of the practice and instructor below.
About Qigong:
Qigong is an ancient practice that integrates movement, stillness, and deep breathing. The purpose of qigong is to relax and release tension so that the elements that give us energy and health (breath, blood, lymph, etc) can flow freely throughout the body. Movements in qigong are slow, circular, graceful, and flowing. These movements lubricate the joints, strengthen the muscles, improve circulation, and relax the nervous system. Qigong is a moving meditation that brings awareness to our breath and expands our range of motion. Qigong creates space for health, balance, and calm which can maximize our body’s natural healing processes. Qigong is an easy practice that can be done standing, sitting, or lying down. People of all ages can practice and enjoy this gentle ancient art.
About the instructor:
Heidi Magnus has taught qigong for five years and has practiced since 2015. Heidi’s first career was as an environmental scientist and she still enjoys applying the scientific method and observation skills to all aspects of life. Heidi enjoys making connections between ancient wisdoms, like Qigong, and current research in neuroscience, psychology, and wellbeing. For the last 26 years, Heidi has owned a deli with her sister Kate and finds that qigong helps her to thrive in a busy work environment. Qigong is a vital part of her self-care and she enjoys sharing the tools she has learned for navigating life and its ever-changing challenges. Currently she studies qigong with four teachers (Dr. Roger Jahnke, Mimi Kuo Deemer, Marisa Cranfil, Anthony Korahais). The teachings of Josh Korda and Sharon Salzberg also inspire Heidi in her practice. Heidi enjoys teaching Qigong, and finds sharing the practice with others rewarding. Heidi is offering classes through Gunnison Public Library. These classes are for beginners or advanced students who want to practice in a fun and casual community atmosphere.
