On Tuesday, May 31 at 6 pm at the Crested Butte Library we will screen “Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom” and have a discussion with former Ukrainian Peace Corps volunteer, Crystal Kotowski-Edmunds.
About the documentary:
It was released in 2015, is rated TV-MA, is 98 minutes long. “Over 93 days in Ukraine, what started as peaceful student demonstrations became a violent revolution and full-fledged civil rights movement.” – Netflix
Crystal Kotowski-Edmunds is a long-time CB local who served in the Peace Corps in Nepal (2015), Armenia (2015-2016) and Ukraine (2019-2020), until Peace Corps evacuated all members around the world due to COVID-19. Crystal was posted in Khmelnytskyi, Ukraine with the organization Smart Environment Khmelnytskyi, establishing new standards of waste management in the oblast and country and working with the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development on a Green Cities Action Plan, and in her secondary project she worked with the Carpathian National Nature Park in Yaremche, Ukraine. She first moved to the Gunnison Valley to serve in AmeriCorps for the Coal Creek Watershed Coalition and now is an environmental protection specialist with the Environmental Protection Agency, Region 8 (Colorado, Utah, Montana, Dakotas, Wyoming, and 28 tribal nations) working in the Superfund and Emergency Management Division, Cost Recovery and Liability Analysis Team. She is dedicated to international peacebuilding through environmental security.
