Join us on Sunday, January 22 at 5 pm for a free screening of Russy Baby Productions’ The Majestic Black Canyon (Part II). This is the 9th film from Gunnison area film producer and historian Russ Lallier and it covers the rail operation of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad through the Black Canyon, and the construction of both Blue Mesa and Morrow Point Dams.
More the film:
Once known as the Canon of the San Xavier, the Black Canyon was as dangerous, as it was beautiful for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad operations between 1882-1949. Travel west, back in time, between where the location of current day Blue Mesa Dam is, then west through the Majestic Black Canyon of the Gunnison, to where Morrow Point Dam is now located, with history, photos, maps, film clips, and interviews. Join Dr. Bruce Bartleson, who talks about the geology of the area, Colorado State Historian Dr. Duane Vandenbusche of Western Colorado University, talking about the Colorado River Basin, and Gene Mason, who was part of the construction crews of both Blue Mesa & Morrow Point Dams, while we track the Denver & Rio Grande’s route, mile-by-mile, through the Black Canyon.
This event is free and open to all.
